A Personal Experience That Changed How I See Sound
In November 2023, a Chinese friend invited me to his daughter's wedding. We knew each other through business and had maintained a friendly but fairly casual relationship. Before that day, I had never paid much attention to Chinese wedding traditions or the cultural meaning behind them.
The wedding reception followed traditional Chinese customs. During the celebration, a group of musicians began playing traditional Chinese horns. The sound was loud and high-pitched, with a distinctive melody that I was not familiar with. To my ears, it was rather unusual and not particularly pleasant.
But the Chinese friend sitting beside me had a completely different reaction. He was visibly excited, clapping his hands and moving along with the music. He seemed to enjoy every moment.
When we talked about it, he told me that he had grown up listening to this kind of music. He had heard those horns since childhood, and whenever he heard them again, they brought back a strong sense of excitement and nostalgia. Most importantly, the sound reminded him of his homeland.
I found this interesting. The same music that sounded unfamiliar and somewhat unpleasant to me carried a completely different meaning for him.
That moment changed the way I thought about sound. I began to realize that the sounds we hear throughout our lives can become closely connected to our memories and personal experiences. Sometimes, hearing just a few familiar notes is enough to bring back feelings we have not thought about for years.
It made me see that the way we experience sound is not simply about what reaches our ears. It is also about what those sounds mean to us.
How Sound Becomes Part of Our Emotions
Every country has its own national anthem. These songs often carry deep meaning for citizens, representing their homeland, history, and shared identity. When people hear their national anthem, they may feel pride, unity, or a strong emotional connection to their country.
I think something similar happens in our personal lives.
A particular song may remind us of our childhood. Another may bring back memories of someone we once loved. Even a simple melody or familiar background sound can take us back to a place or a moment that has stayed in our minds.
What makes this interesting is that everyone has different experiences. A song that brings happiness to one person may remind someone else of a difficult time. A sound that feels comforting to one listener may be irritating to another.
My experience at the wedding helped me understand this more clearly. The meaning of a sound often comes from the memories and feelings we associate with it.
I don't think we should judge music only by whether it sounds beautiful to us. Sometimes, its deepest value comes from the personal meaning it carries.
Sound can become part of our emotional identity. It connects us to people, places, and moments that have shaped who we are.
A Spiritual Perspective: Sound, Vibration, and Universal Energy
I believe in universal energy, and I see sound as one of the ways we can connect with the invisible world around us.
From my spiritual perspective, everything in the universe exists within a field of energy and vibration. Sound is one expression of that vibration, and I believe it can reach beyond our physical senses and touch something deeper within us.
There is a famous statement often attributed to Nikola Tesla:
"If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration."
This idea has always resonated with my way of seeing the universe. I believe that our connection with sound is not limited to what our ears can hear. Some sounds seem to awaken feelings, memories, and a sense of connection that is difficult to explain through words alone.
Perhaps this is why certain melodies can move us so deeply, even when we do not fully understand their meaning.
I see sound as more than a physical experience. It is also a part of how I understand energy, consciousness, and our connection with the universe.

Sound and the Journey Within
Over time, I have come to see sound as more than something we hear in our everyday lives. It can awaken memories, stir emotions, and bring our attention back to parts of ourselves that we may have forgotten.
A gentle melody may bring comfort during a difficult time. A familiar tune can take us back to childhood. Other sounds may help us become calmer, more focused, or more aware of the present moment.
I believe every person has a unique relationship with sound because we each carry different memories, experiences, and forms of energy within us.
Looking back at that wedding in November 2023, I still remember how excited my friend became when he heard those traditional Chinese horns. To me, they were simply unfamiliar sounds. To him, they carried the warmth of childhood and a deep connection to his homeland.
That experience helped me understand something important: sound can carry meanings that go far beyond its melody.
From my spiritual perspective, listening to sound is also an opportunity to become more aware of the energy within and around us. Sometimes, when we slow down and truly listen, we discover feelings and connections that we might otherwise overlook.

Perhaps the deeper meaning of sound is not only in what we hear, but also in what it awakens within our consciousness.
For me, this is one of the most fascinating aspects of sound. It is part of our everyday lives, yet it can open a meaningful path toward understanding our emotions, exploring our inner selves, and feeling more connected to the universe.
