Love is probably one of the easiest things to lose control of, especially at the beginning of a relationship when everything is new and feelings are growing quickly. Sometimes things seem to be going well, and then suddenly something feels different. A message takes longer to arrive. A conversation feels shorter than usual. The other person seems less interested, or maybe we simply start worrying that something we care about is slipping away.
At times like this, most of us want something that can help us understand what is happening. We want to know how the other person feels, whether the relationship is still moving forward, or whether we are worrying about something that isn't really there. Today, one of the popular ways people look for those answers is through a love Tarot reading.
I completely understand why people bring these concerns to Tarot. Love isn't always easy to understand, especially when another person's feelings are involved. Sometimes even a small change in the way someone talks to us is enough to make us wonder what is happening.
When I first became interested in Tarot, I thought a love reading sounded quite simple. Ask about someone, draw a few cards, and hopefully the cards give you an answer. But as I spent more time learning how Tarot readings work, I realized that drawing the cards is only the beginning. A card may have several meanings, and the same card can feel very different depending on the question and the other cards around it.
That changed the way I looked at love Tarot. Instead of expecting one card to tell me exactly what another person is thinking or what will happen next, I began to see the reading as a way of looking more carefully at the relationship itself.

What Is a Love Tarot Reading?
A love Tarot reading doesn't require a special deck. The same 78 Tarot cards can be used for questions about relationships, attraction, separation, reconciliation, or meeting someone new.
If you're new to the cards, I explained the basic structure of the deck in my introduction to Tarot reading, including how a reading works and how Tarot has also moved from traditional in-person readings to online formats.
The difference with love Tarot is mainly in what we are asking about.
Someone in a relationship may want to understand why things have become distant. Someone who has just met a new person may be wondering where the connection is going. After a breakup, the concern may be whether to keep waiting or begin moving on.
This is also where I think the question becomes important. A question such as “Does he love me?” seems very natural, but it leaves very little room for interpretation. We almost expect the cards to say yes or no.
Something like “What should I understand about this relationship right now?” gives us more to look at. The cards may point toward closeness, hesitation, disappointment, attachment, poor communication, or something we haven't been paying attention to.
For me, that makes more sense than trying to force every reading into a definite answer.
What Can Tarot Show About a Relationship?
Imagine a couple who have been together for some time. Recently, one person has become quieter and less affectionate. The other person may immediately begin worrying that the relationship is ending or that someone else is involved.
A Tarot reading may give us a way to look at the situation from different angles. Perhaps one card seems to point toward emotional distance. Another may suggest poor communication. A third may bring up something from the past that still affects the relationship.
None of those things automatically tells us exactly what the other person is thinking, but together they can give us something useful to consider.
This is one of the things I've learned while practicing Tarot. Understanding an individual card is one part of reading it. Understanding how several cards connect is often much harder.
Love Cards Don't Always Mean What We First Think
Some Tarot cards naturally catch our attention when the question is about love.
The Lovers is probably the clearest example. When I first saw this card, it was easy to associate it immediately with romance. If someone asked about a new relationship and The Lovers appeared, it would be tempting to think, “This must be the right person.”
But The Lovers can also involve choices and the direction of a relationship. Seeing the card doesn't automatically mean that two people are soulmates or that they will stay together.
The Lovers is one of the 22 Major Arcana cards, and learning about the Major Arcana helped me understand that a card can carry more than the first meaning we see in its picture.
The Two of Cups can suggest partnership, mutual attraction, or an emotional connection. The Three of Swords, on the other hand, is difficult to look at without thinking about heartbreak, pain, or disappointment.
These cards belong to the Minor Arcana, where Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles often bring everyday emotions, actions, communication, conflicts, and practical situations into a reading.
Even then, I don't think one card should decide the whole reading.
If I saw the Three of Swords, I wouldn't immediately decide that a breakup was coming. Perhaps the pain has already happened. Perhaps an old experience is still affecting the relationship. The surrounding cards and the original question would help me understand which direction makes more sense.
This is something I've gradually understood while learning Tarot. Memorizing the meaning of a card is only the beginning. Putting it beside other cards can change how I understand it.

A Simple Three-Card Love Reading
I don't think a beginner needs a complicated Tarot spread to explore a relationship. Three cards are already enough to practice with.
For a love reading, I like the idea of keeping the positions simple:
Card 1 — You
Card 2 — The Other Person
Card 3 — The Relationship
The first card can represent what you are bringing into the situation: your feelings, concerns, expectations, or perhaps something you haven't fully recognized yet. The second looks at the other person's place in the relationship. The third helps bring the first two together and looks at the relationship as it currently stands.
I wouldn't keep drawing more cards just because the first three don't give me the answer I wanted. I made a similar mistake when I first practiced three-card readings. Drawing again and again usually gave me more meanings to think about rather than making the first reading clearer.
I would rather stay with those three cards for a while and try to understand their connection.
If you're just starting with three cards, you can also practice a Past, Present, Future Tarot spread. Instead of looking at two people and their relationship, the three cards represent what happened before, what is happening now, and what may happen next.
When the Reading Is About an Ex
Breakups probably create some of the hardest love questions because feelings don't always end when a relationship ends.
Someone may still love an ex months later. They may replay old conversations, remember the good parts of the relationship, and wonder whether the other person is doing the same.
It is understandable that a Tarot reading at this point can quickly become focused on one thing: Will my ex come back?
If you're unsure how to approach a question like this, I've shared some practical examples in my guide to asking Tarot questions about love, career, and life. Sometimes changing the way we ask can help us explore a relationship from a different perspective.
But I think there are other things worth looking at too.
The cards might bring attention to why the relationship ended, what we are still holding onto, or whether waiting for someone is keeping us from moving forward. A reading could also make us think about our own part in what happened.
That doesn't mean reconciliation cannot happen. People do separate and later get back together. But there is a difference between looking at the possibility of reconciliation and treating a few Tarot cards as a promise that someone will return.
For me, the first approach leaves more room to think clearly about the situation.
Can Tarot Tell You If Someone Is Your Soulmate?
The idea of a soulmate is naturally connected with love Tarot. If we meet someone and immediately feel a strong connection, it is easy to wonder whether that person has come into our life for a special reason.
A reading containing The Lovers, Two of Cups, or other positive cards can make that feeling even stronger.
I've spent time reading about soulmate beliefs as well as Tarot, and one thing I've noticed is how easily we can connect the two when we want certainty about a relationship. A beautiful reading may feel reassuring, especially when we already hope that a particular person is meant for us.
But for me, one Tarot card isn't enough to decide that someone is my soulmate.
Relationships still happen outside the cards. People change their minds. Feelings change. Two people may care deeply for each other and still make different choices.
I think Tarot can be interesting when exploring how we feel about a connection, but I would be careful about using one reading to decide who we are meant to spend our life with.
What About the Future of Your Love Life?
This is probably where love Tarot becomes most interesting and also most difficult.
If someone is single, they may want to know when they will meet a partner. Someone already dating may want to know whether the relationship will lead to marriage. Someone going through problems may want to know whether the relationship will survive.
I have the same curiosity about the future that many people do. If we could know in advance how a relationship would turn out, many decisions would certainly be easier.
But while learning Tarot, I've become more interested in the connection between what is happening now and what may happen later.
For example, if a reading shows disappointment from the past, hesitation in the present, and the possibility of a new beginning, I wouldn't take that as a fixed prediction. I would look at how those three ideas connect. Perhaps an old relationship is still affecting the choices being made today, and those choices may influence what happens next.
That is very similar to the way I practice the Past, Present, Future Tarot spread. The future card becomes part of the story rather than a final answer that cannot change.

Online Love Tarot Readings
When I started learning Tarot, I also came across online readings. I can understand why they have become popular, especially for love questions. Not everyone knows a Tarot reader personally, and sometimes we simply want to see how someone else might interpret the cards. For me, this can also be part of learning. I can compare an online interpretation with what I understand from the cards myself. Sometimes another reading may connect the cards in a way I hadn't considered.
If you're curious, you can also try an online love Tarot reading here → and see what interpretation comes up for your situation.
I would still treat it as something to explore rather than letting a reading make an important relationship decision for me. Whether to stay with someone, contact an ex, or start a new relationship is still a choice we have to make ourselves.
Final Thoughts
The more I learn and practice love Tarot, the more I understand how many hopes and worries people carry when they're in love. We want to know how the other person feels, whether the relationship will last, and what may happen next. Sometimes we may even feel nervous when turning over a card because we're afraid of seeing something we think is bad.
But I don't think we should worry too much about drawing a difficult card.
For me, Tarot is more useful when it helps us look at the relationship and at ourselves. I don't see it as a way to secretly look inside another person's mind or follow their private thoughts.
Instead of always asking “Does this person love me?”, I think we can ask:
What is happening between us right now?
What am I not seeing clearly in this relationship?
What can I do to improve our communication?
What can I learn from this relationship?
A card that looks negative doesn't decide the whole future. It may simply make us notice disappointment, fear, poor communication, or something else that needs our attention.
Love still has to be built by two people. Whatever cards appear, we still have to talk, listen, understand each other, and make our own choices.
I may still be curious about what will happen tomorrow. But if a love Tarot reading helps me understand a little more about what is happening today and what I should do next, then for me, that is already useful.
